Teany photos

I just got my copy of Moby's new book (co-written with Kelly Tisdale) about teany, the teashop/vegan restaurant he and Kelly own over in New York City. After reading the first few pages, I was inspired to whip out my camcorder and upload some shots of me and my family at Teany during our New York vacation last December. Enjoy!

Mitch Hedberg, dead at 37

Wow, I can't believe it. Mitch Hedberg, a comedian I just started listening to last semester, has passed away. He was definitely an outstanding and original comedian and he will be sorely missed.

Here's the MTV News article.

Also, here's one of my favorite bits from his last CD, Mitch All Together.

Mitch, you are in our hearts and prayers.

New Episode of Jump Cut, plus my musical debut!

Hey, gang! There's a new episode of Jump Cut Radio available for download! Fresh, hot, right out of the oven goodness!

Also, I was really bored Sunday night, so I started messing around with GarageBand, Apple's musicmaking software. Here's the song I came up with:

"A Piano in My Pocket"

It was made entirely out of the audio loops that came with the application AND I made it in less than twenty minutes! Enjoy!

New Chemical Brothers video!

Click on the album art to download the video for "Believe"!

Alright, if you haven't guessed, I am an extreme music lover, and there's nothing I like more than to see music and video meshed together in perfect harmony. So, naturally, I freaked out when I saw the new video for the Chemical Brothers' song "Believe," off their latest album, Push the Button (look close, you'll see my review for the album on Amazon.com).

Anyway, the video, like most ChemBros videos, involves a man having a serious trip (drug-induced or otherwise). He works in a car factory, with tons of robotic machinery. In the video, he is haunted by the machinery, which seem to follow him around town. It's really cool, and a hell of a lot better than their previous video for "Galvanize."

The video was directed by Dom & Nic, who have collaborated with the Chems on several other videos.

Random iPod Shuffle Comment

Note: That's not me in the photo.

Hey, guys! Now, I didn't want this blog to be one of those personal things ("this is what I did today...") kind of crap, but I just have to say that today, I was at work moving tables or whatever, while wearing my iPod Shuffle, when all of a sudden, the headphone cord got caught on something and it got pulled from the Shuffle! Surprisingly, when I plugged the headphones back in, I realized that my iPod had automatically paused the music after the headphones came out. This is a really nifty feature that the good folks at Apple did not advertise. Don't you just love finding out new things about the stuff you own? No? Well, I did. Whatever.

There's a new episode of Jump Cut Radio available for download. Get it while it's hot! Also, Nathan and I have just recorded a brief commercial for the show so, if you're new to Jump Cut, or just podcasts in general, give our ad a listen.

I might not be posting for a while. Easter Break's about to start so if you don't hear from me for a few days, I hope everybody has a great Easter holiday! Enjoy yourselves! Hopefully, it'll start getting warmer around here. :-)

Eggs R Awesome!

I know it's a bit early, but Easter Break is coming up. So we got to color our own eggs this weekend here at Hewlett, my residence hall here at UNCW. I wanted to get a couple shots of mine before I ate it. It was eggcellent! (What? I can't make a few bad puns every now and then??)

Jump Cut merchandise and "American Splendor"

Phew! Just put the finishing touches on a bunch of new stuff over at the DiMattiaFilms Online Store...new Jump Cut Radio stuff!! We got shirts for dudes, chicks, and other! Plus a new, larger coffee mug!

Also, I checked out American Splendor last week at the library and finally got around to watching it last night. Man, what a great movie! For those who are unawares, Paul Giamatti (of "Sideways") stars as Harvey Pekar, a real-life file clerk who turned his drab, mundane life into a successful series of comic books, titled "American Splendor." The way the film seamlessly blends fact and fiction, actors and the people that they portray, is fascinating. Why this film wasn't up for a whole slew of Oscars is entirely beyond me. I'll try and discuss the movie in the next episode of Jump Cut. Me and Nathan will probably be recording it a little earlier next week since our easter break starts this Wednesday.

"American Splendor" was produced by HBO Films, who were responsible for bringing films like "Cinema Paridiso" and "Maria Full of Grace" to American audiences. They've also produced some of my favorite films, like Maggie Smith's "My House in Umbria" and Geoffrey Rush's recent biopic "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers," which I was reminded of a lot while watching "American Splendor."

New Jump Cut Episode!

Nathan and I finished recording episode 2 of Jump Cut Radio last night. Like I said, Eric Martin was our special guest for the show. We had a lot to discuss, including Quentin Tarantino, the fate of the "Toy Story" series, and vintage animated films like "Transformers: The Movie" and "Akira." As with the previous episode, we use a little bit o' profanity, just so you know.

Also, CafePress.com (the folks that made my online store) are having a spring sale! Save $3 off orders of $30 or more! Just use the coupon code 3CPSALE. Support my site and dress in style while doing so! :-)

"The Life Aquatic" to be released on Criterion DVD, plus coming soon on Jump Cut...

Coming soon to Criterion Collection DVD: Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," one of the most innovative and humorous films of 2004. Another film that was sadly overlooked at this year's Oscars. I'll try and give a review of the film on the next episode of Jump Cut, as well as review "The Incredibles" DVD and more!

iPriest

I just had to add a picture from the Catholic Insider website. I think Father Roderick's logo is so cool! He's gotta be the hippest pastor out there. He used to have an iPod Shuffle (like I have), but he's recently upgraded to an iPod mini. Tune into his new episode where he takes a coffee break and answers some fanmail!

Jump Cut tops 50! Plus, see more short films online!

Well, Jump Cut has topped the 50-download mark, so we're on our way! Podcast Alley has yet to add our podcast to its directory, but I have submitted info about it to Adam Curry, the "inventor" of podcasting, at Curry.com, as well as Father Roderick of Catholic Insider Radio, one of the most interesting podcasts out there. Listen in to his March 8th episode. He takes us on a soundseeing tour of his Holland church and the choir you hear there is breathtaking!

Anyway, in movie news, I received this from Apple Hot News earlier today:

"Delta Campus MovieFest Atlanta, the world’s largest student film festival, found huge success this year with hundreds of short film submissions. Over the course of one week, thousands of students worked in teams to create storyboards, film and edit short films using Apple iBooks and iLife software. Hosted at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, the final celebration of Campus MovieFest attracted more than 3,000 participants to honor the 200+ musicians who participated, the top 15 movies created and highlights from hundreds of other movies. See the winning movies and photos from Fox Theatre."

Click here to learn more and watch the short films. You'll need QuickTime to watch the movies. I highly recommend "What Mocks a Good Movie," which tells its story entirely in LEGO. I also recommend "a different perspective" in which a man's life is literally taken over by a singer/songwriter's compelling lyrics.

45 downloads and growing...plus DiMattiaFilms on GoTriad Radio!

So far, 45 people have downloaded our first episode of Jump Cut Radio. Not bad, for a first-time podcast! We hope to get onto Podcast Alley pretty soon, but until then, download the new episode of GoRadio, the only podcast where you can get the scoop on what's going on in Greensboro, North Carolina! I recently submitted an audio file plugging DiMattiaFilms and praising GoRadio and they aired it on their new episode (it's episode #4, by the way). You have to wait until the very end to hear my audio file, but they thank me at the beginning of the episode. I've also added a whole bunch of awesome links to other blogs and podcasts, so check 'em out and tell them Devin sent you.

Jump Cut Radio: Episode 1

Alright, earlier this evening, Nathan Sloan and I got together and recorded a 20-plus-minute rant on various movie-related topics. The result is our very first episode of Jump Cut Radio! You can either download the episode as an mp3 file or you can subscribe to our show so you'll always have new episodes immediately downloaded to your computer! Just download podcast software like iPodderX, copy our RSS link into it, and new episodes will be downloaded onto iTunes!

Also, I submitted our show for consideration on Podcast Alley so once it shows up, PLEASE vote for us so we can get noticed on there!! I'll post a voting link as soon as we get on the alley.

If you have any questions, comments, criticisms, suggestions, random stuff, please e-mail me and maybe I'll read your message on the air on next week's episode!

Podcast coming later tonight; What is a Podcast?

Wow. That's all I can say about that. Wow.

Alright, once you're done lookin' at that, it's time for some news. Well, I got a page set up to host my new podcast, which I've tentatively titled Jump Cut Radio. Nathan should be stopping by later tonight to record the episode with me. Let me go ahead and briefly explain what a podcast is exactly.

Podcasting uses RSS feeds with enclosures to transmit MP3 files to personal computers that have subscribed to the specific feeds they want to listen to. If you've ever used programs like NetNewsWire, which are designed to look on news websites like CNN and BBC and check for new articles, you've had some experience with RSS and XML feeds. Podcasting is similar, except instead of news articles, people post mp3 files which special software (iPodderX is one example) looks for and downloads onto your computer.

What podcasting has to offer are downloadable radio broadcasts that you can listen to on-demand using your iPod (or other Mp3 player, hence the name, PODcasts). The technology was developed by Adam Curry, a former VJ on MTV, who has a bunch of websites that help explain what podcasting is all about (I recommend visiting iPodder.org for more info). His podcast, the Daily Source Code, is probably the one you should start with. He talks about new technologies and breakthroughs in podcasting, the latest podcasts, plus some cool music. You can download it at Curry.com

Most of the podcasts out right now are mostly talk shows. Since you need ASCAP and BMI licenses to broadcast mainstream music on the internet, most folks who do play music play independent or indie artists. My personal favorite is Tracks Up the Tree, hosted by Funtime Ben, at UpTheTree.com. There's also Coverville, a radio station that plays rare and obscure cover songs, which is ASCAP licensed, at Coverville.com

The best place to look for the most popular podcasts, plus how to get set up and download the right software, is Podcast Alley.

I think that pretty much sums up podcasting. I hope it gave everyone a basic understanding of this awesome new technology.

Random News Article of the Week: Robot arms are put to the ultimate test: an arm wrestling competition!
Free MP3 of the Week: New Coldplay Song! WHOO-HOO! (oh, and apparently, it sounds a lot like a Kraftwerk song)

(UPDATE: They've taken off the Coldplay MP3 due to bandwidth overload. If you want it, e-mail me and I'll try and send it to you.)

Also, if you have a buck to spend (or if you've won a free song from Pepsi), I highly recommend downloading this new song from Ben Folds. WARNING: May contain profanity.

Nope, scratch that. MOST DEFINITELY contains profanity.

Download my first script!

Great news! Last Friday, I finally finished my first feature-length screenplay, "Split Decision," which I have been working on for about the last two-and-a-half years! I quickly copyrighted it with the Writers Guild of America and now, everyone can see it for themselves by downloading it here! You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it. It's roughly 74 pages long, which is actually pretty short for a feature-length. Don't worry; I'll be making tons of revisions as the school year continues. I'll try to post my revised copies online as well.

Also, I'm going to try something different for my next radio episode. My good friend Nathan Sloan will be in the studio Wednesday evening as my co-host. I feel like we need more people involved in this project so there's always something interesting to talk about. I'll discuss new films I've seen like "Be Cool" and "Constantine," talk about the Oscars, and some other stuff. You're just gonna have to tune in to find out! I'm also trying to get an RSS feed going so I can make DiMattiaFilms Radio an official podcast! That way, I can announce new episodes on websites like Podcast Alley and iPodder.org.

Keep checking back for updates and stuff! PLEASE!!

Radio show scrapped, hitcounter added, and San Jose's online film festival!

Hey, guys! I decided to opt out of doing a radio show from Greensboro, mainly because all my music files are back in Wilmington and I wanted to wait until I had someone else to interview for a new episode. In other news, I've added a hitcounter to my site so I can find out how many folks are visiting and whether or not I need to do something CRAZY and UNEXPECTED to bring more people here (I'll give you a hint: it involves a bowl of coleslaw and an inflatable moose). Also, Wired Magazine has revealed that the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, will be offering a good portion of its short film entries online for download. The catch? It's PC only. AARRGH!! Well, maybe next year. You can read the article here.

Profile Photo

Hey, everyone! Spring Break's goin' pretty well over here in Greensboro. Even though it did ice over Sunday night (some spring break!) I'm going to try and do another radio show here, this time with a little more content. I'll be reviewing "Constantine" as well as give a sneak peek at the new films coming out this Friday like "Be Cool" and "The Jacket." Keep watching this space for more info!

Oh, and I've updated my profile photo (see sidebar), but I also wanted to show the full-size version of that photo (above). It was taken by my brother, Andy, while my family was up in New York City for the holidays. If you haven't already guessed, "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is one of my favorite television shows.
